In our fast paced modern society, we tend to forget the basic simple lifestyle habits which will lead us to wellness and health. The wellbeing of our mouths is an important and often neglected area of our health, which has important consequences for our overall health. We know from extensive scientific research and many thousands of studies that there is a very real connection between the health of our mouth and the health of our whole body. A healthy mouth is a vital part of a healthy body.

The most common infections in the mouth are tooth decay and gum disease. Over time, these diseases are known to increase the likelihood of major body problems such as stroke, heart attack, chronic heart disease and diabetes. Also with long term inflammation in our mouths and bodies, we see an increase of a protein called C-Reactive protein. CRP spreads through the blood keeping the immune system constantly fighting infection and draining energy.

A number of studies also suggest that pregnant mothers-to-be with gum disease are at a greater risk of having a low birthweight and preterm baby.

Nutrition is an important part of maintaining health in both our mouths and bodies. Raw or lightly cooked vegetables and also fresh fruits are full of vitamins and minerals which feed life and vitality into our bodies.

Breastmilk is the best nutrition to start babies on, and has the added benefit of encouraging the proper growth and development of the jaw and mouth.

Developing good habits such as regular exercise is important. To heal our bodies, we should make time for adequate sleep and learning practices such as meditation and yoga can be very beneficial. Remember also to stimulate and and cleanse your teeth, mouth and gums with a twice daily practice of flossing and brushing.

Best wishes towards choosing the path which will lead to healing and health in both your mouth and body.
